DENTAL PLAQUE: WHAT IS IT, ITS CAUSES, SYMPTOMS, HOW TO REMOVE & PREVENT IT?

What actually is Dental Plaque? When a high sticky, colorless or pale yellow deposit of film develops constantly on your teeth, it is known as Dental Plaque.
When food particles, saliva, and fluids come in contact with each other, it builds plaque. It is generally formed of bacteria – producing between your teeth and along your gum line. This may damage your tooth enamel and also the gums.
Scientists term Dental plaque a “biofilm” because it is a group of living microbes covered by a gluey polymer layer. The sticky coating allows the microbes to stick to surfaces inside your mouth. This is because they can develop into strong microcolonies. Plaque is mostly visible when you don’t brush or floss the teeth properly.
Bacteria and other microbes get inside your mouth whenever you eat, drink, or even when you breathe.
When you have carbohydrates or sugary foods and drinks, such as milk, juice, fruits, bacteria feed on them. This results in forming of acids during the process. Those acids, later cause troubles such as cavities, gingivitis, and may also result in tooth decay.
If you are a heavy smoker then this can be a cause for the plaque! If plaque goes untreated, it may develop into tartar.
Symptoms for Dental Plaque
Your teeth may feel fuzzy
Bleeding and receding gums
Very bad breath (Halitosis)
Red, swollen, softer gums that bleed when you brush or floss

How to Prevent Plaque formation?
Brush your teeth at least twice a day for a minimum of 2-3 minutes.
Always try to use soft, rounded-tip bristled toothbrushes. You can go for electric toothbrushes as well. They are said to be more efficient to remove plaque.
Always go for the toothpaste that has baking soda or Fluoride.
You have to clean the gaps very carefully, specifically where the gums and teeth meet.
At least floss once daily.
Use an antibacterial mouthwash with the dentist’s recommendation. This reduces bacterial growth which results in plaque or other gum troubles.
Do regular visits to your trusted dentist for a check-up and Teeth Cleaning.
Follow a proper diet and minimize the number of between-meal snacks. Vegetables, such as celery, can easily remove food particles. Celery even enables saliva to neutralize plaque-causing acids.
